The Country Director delivering his speech during the launch
The Country Director of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) Ghana, Abdourahamane Diallo, has underscored the importance of books during his speech at the 19th Ghana International Book Fair (GIBF).
Mr. Diallo said it is important to remind ourselves of the importance of books and the book industry in general.
He stated that UNESCO advocates for access to books, to ensure that everyone can take refuge in reading, and by so doing be able to dream, learn and reflect.
“Books act as the bridge between the past and the present,” he added.
According to him, the 18th edition of the fair brought a huge record of participation of over 14,000 people, and prayed that this edition becomes more successful.
GIBF is organised to celebrate and showcase the rich Ghanaian culture through books, and to bring together all book industry players to exhibit books, creativity and innovations, both local and international.
The 19th edition of the GIBF is underway at the National Theatre, Accra, the goal of which is to expose readers to a wide array of books, on the theme “Reforming the Book Industry for the Future Generation.”
President of the Ghana Publishers Association, Asare Konadu Yamoah, said the GIBF has made progressive strides since the first edition was held in Accra between November 6-12, 1996.
He added that the fair has been one pillar of our cultural heritage that offers the opportunity to showcase our literary works to the world.
“Through this fair, we have gained experience that has helped the private sector to make a significant impact on the Ghanaian book industry,” he added.
The key for you today is to not take things too seriously, Pisces. You’ll find that the more you deliberate over a decision, the harder it will be for you to make. You may miss your opportunity while you’re weighing the facts. Be spontaneous. Try something you’ve never tried before
