US Doctors Screen Children

The Kimathi and Phyllis Reading Project, in collaboration with the Gold Coast Medical Foundation, a US-based group of doctors and medical volunteers, has run a day’s clinic for students, parents and teachers of the Maamobi Prisons School in Accra.

The medical team, led by Dr Kwabena Boakye, a co-founder of the foundation, has for the past two weeks embarked on medical outreaches across the country, including Ho and Dzodze in the Volta Region.

In an interview with the media, Dr Boakye revealed that this year is the foundation’s 10th year of providing medical care to the underprivileged and the vulnerable in the country.

“We also took care of some cerebral palsy children, held a clinic in Ada and some public health lectures at Mensvic Hotel, the Maamobi Prisons School and some parts of the Nima community in Accra, Greater Accra Region. Onwards we are moving to Cape Coast, Abura, Manhyia, Kwahu and Pokuase,” he disclosed.

Dr Boakye explained that the team would also donate some hospital beds, an ultra-sound scanning machine and other medical suppliers to the Premium Clinic in Cape Coast, Central Region.

Phyllis Kuenyehia, another co-founder of the Reading Project, indicated that the project took care of students’ welfare needs first, with the belief that before students can focus and read effectively, they need to be physically, psychologically, mentally and emotionally well.

She said in seeking the welfare of the students, the project saw the need to collaborate with the medical foundation to visit the Maamobi Prisons School to run a day’s clinic for the students, their parents, the teachers and the community.
