Sarkodie made history when he took home the artiste of the decade award at this year’s edition of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA), which was held Saturday at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC).
He beat competition from celebrated artistes like Samini, Shatta Wale, Stonebwoy and R2Bees. The others were Efya, Becca, Okyeame Kwame, No Tribe & Nacee and Joe Mettle.
Organised by Charterhouse with sponsorship from Vodafone, the awards ceremony was held to honour Ghanaian music icons for their commitment, hard work and dedication in the music career.
The awards ceremony, which was hosted by ace broadcaster Kwame Sefa Kayi and Berla Mundi, saw appearances from musicians, radio, sports, film and television personalities, artiste managers, music producers and music fans from all walks of life.
The night saw Shatta Wale taking home two awards? highlife song of the year with his song ‘My Level’ and reggae/dancehall song of the year awards.
Stonebwoy also won two? best reggae dancehall artiste of the year and best collaboration of the year awards.
Highlife and Afro-pop artiste Kuami Eugene was honoured with highlife artiste of the year and album of the year awards.
Rev. Mrs. Mary Ghansah, Prof. Kofi Abraham and Obuoba J.A. Adofo were honoured with life time achievement award.
It was a night of thrilling performances from some of the awardees and other artistes who dished out splendid stage performances that got patrons dancing.
Some of the artistes who performed at the event were Efya, Medikal, Samini, King Promise, Kuami Eugene, Abrantie Amakye Dede, Berima Sidney, Kwesi Arthur, Kidi, among others.
The event also witnessed performances from special guest artistes, which include Burna Boy from Nigeria.
The artiste of the year and popular song of the year winners will be announced at a press conference this week by organisers.
