The Volta Regional Security Committee (REGSEC) is investigating claims of extortion made in a petition presented to the Volta Regional Minister by a group calling itself Volta Region-Cross Border Traders’ Association.
The group which transacts business between Ghana and Togo said the activities of some persons claiming to be national security operatives were having a negative toll on their business.
They have therefore called for investigation into the matter to help curb the alleged harassments and extortions to ensure order and good working environment for them.
Chairman of the group, Prosper Tagborlo had told the press that should nothing be done about the situation, they will have no choice than to use unapproved routes to deny government the revenue due it.
However, speaking with the Volta Regional Minister, Dr. Archibald Letsa, on the status of the petition which was presented to him on Friday, July 27, 2018, he said REGSEC was handling the matter. He was hopeful that the key officials working on the matter will do a good job.
He, however, advised the traders to always get the right documentations for their goods adding that officials manning the borders should be circumspect in the delivery of their duties.
Meanwhile, one Maxwell Lugudor who was mentioned by the traders as one of the alleged National Security operatives who should be investigated in connection with the extortion claim, has denied the allegations.
He says the allegations were unfounded as he and his team had always carried out their lawful duty without fear or favour.
He wrote through his lawyers that he had never extorted money in the performance of his duty.
