George Loh
A former member of parliament for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the South Dayi Constituency, George Loh, has hinted how the party is making frantic preparations to give the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) a dose of their own medicine.
He said the party, particularly in the Volta Region, could have done better to prevent the poor voter-turnout in the 2016 elections in which the NDC experienced the heaviest defeat ever since the 4th Republic.
According to the lawyer, who is now vying for the post of Volta Regional Secretary, the NDC albeit did its best, the results of the 2016 elections proved that “our (NDC) best was not good enough.” To this end, the NDC is poised to do things differently in order to regain the trust, confidence and support of the party in the region.
Mr. Loh, who is contesting the incumbent, Simon Amegashie-Viglo, and two others, James Gunu and Manfred Nuku-Dei, stressed that should he get the nod as regional secretary, he would make sure the NDC defeats the NPP in the region to secure victory in 2020.
He made the declaration during an interview with an Accra-based radio station over his intention to contest a party position instead of going to contest the MP seat he lost in 2016 after serving only a term.
He said “we will take the fight to them; we will match them boot for boot so that they will not have the space they had to operate before”.
In addition to this there were other multifaceted issues including internal challenges which contributed to the defeat of the NDC and depreciation of its support base in the Volta Region during the 2016 election.
The NDC which has always recorded over 800,000 votes in the Volta Region had its votes reduced to a little over 600,000 instead of the one million votes agenda set by the party in the region prior to the 2016 election.
He said the fortunes of the party would change with him as the regional secretary. He stressed that he would employ his legal, advertising, branding and management expertise to ensure things are done differently because he believes the party should change certain things.
He indicated that the party would be rebranded in the region to reflect the changes that would ensure proper dissemination of information and its impact.
