THE COUNCIL of Zongo Chiefs in Kumasi has appealed to the police to resume their security duties in the Zongo areas with immediate effect.
According to the Zongo chiefs, the police have stopped operating in the Zongo communities within the Kumasi Metropolis for some time now. They lamented that the absence of the police had created serious security problems within the Zongo areas, where there is no more law and order.
Prof. Lukman, a representative of the Sarkin Zongo, who spoke on behalf of the council, said the police stopped operating in the Zongo areas few months ago. “The police stopped operating in the Zongo areas when the shooting of seven Zongo people by the police took place at Manso Nkwanta”, he disclosed.
Since that time, he bemoaned that unfortunately lawlessness had rapidly become the order of the day in the Zongo communities. He stated that now that the committee that investigated the shooting incident had presented their report, the police should resume their work.
According to him, the police and the public, especially the Zongo people, are not enemies therefore there is the need for the two parties to work together. He disclosed that the Zongo chiefs and opinion leaders had been in constant talks with their people, notably the youth, to welcome the police back.
The representative of the Sarkin Zongo said “the anger that greeted the shooting of the seven people has doused now so the police are welcome back”.
He was of the view that proper development cannot take place in the Zongo areas if there is security breakdown so the police should return to work.
Prof. Lukman gave the remarks during the Asokore Mampong Municipal Assembly town hall meeting, which took place at Asokore Mampong yesterday.
