A 19-year-old man fatally shot himself when he used the butt of his rifle to hit a neighbour he had wounded earlier at Zaare in the Bolgatanga District of the Upper East Region.
The deceased, who is yet to be identified, according to sources, had shot a neighbour and was using the butt of the rifle to hit the wounded man when his rifle accidentally discharged into his abdominal area.
Police reports from Zaare indicate that the incident occurred last week Sunday, July 19.
According to the police, they received information that a young man had been shot and upon reaching the scene they found a male adult aged about 19 years lying dead in a supine position with his intestines protruding. He was clad with a black jacket, black T-shirt, blue tracksuit and a pair of canvas.
A search of the corpse revealed a live BB cartridge, an itel mobile phone and a bunch of keys.
Four more live BB cartridges and a spent BB catridge were found scattered at the scene.
Madam Cynthia Atarima, the assembly woman for the area and owner of a nearby drinking bar, later confirmed to the police that the deceased had earlier shot a victim who had been rushed to the hospital.
Preliminary investigations at the scene revealed that around 11:00pm, Vincent Amoah, who is about 45 years old, was at Cynthia’s drinking spot.
While enjoying a bottle of mini club inside the bar, the deceased attacked him with a pump action gun and shot him on his left shoulder.
However, the deceased in an attempt to hit the victim with the butt of the gun, fired into his own stomach.
The police said the deceased, in an attempt to flee the scene, fell and died on the spot but the victim was rushed by witnesses to the regional hospital in Bolgatanga for treatment.
The police later proceeded to the male surgical ward of the same hospital and met Mr. Amoah receiving treatment while on admission.
The body of the deceased was deposited at the hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy.
