The suspects
Two suspected gold robbers have been arrested at Amanchia in the Atwima Nwabiagya South District of the Ashanti Region after allegedly terrorising a miner and his workers on multiple occasions.
The suspects, identified as Ernest Opoku, alias “Bobolinking,” and Frank Owusu, alias “One Blood,” were arrested following a distress call made to the Nkawie Police Command.
The victim, Awaka Stephen Abanga, a miner operating at Amanchia, told police that the suspects, together with about 15 accomplices, attacked his mining site at about 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 31, 2026, and demanded gold valued at GH¢300,000 from him.
According to Mr. Abanga, the suspects initially arrived at his site and met his workers, who later called to inform him about their presence.
“My workers called to inform me that a group of people had come to my mining site looking for me. I rushed to the site, and upon my arrival, they demanded that I hand over gold and any cash I had in my possession,” he recounted.
He said when he questioned their identity, the suspects attacked him with machetes, inflicted injuries on his hands, and fled with the gold.
Following the incident, Mr. Abanga lodged a formal complaint at the Nkawie Police Station, where he was issued a police medical report form to seek treatment at a hospital.
He further disclosed that he informed his father, who resides in Bawku, about the incident, and his father assured him that the perpetrators would soon be apprehended.
Mr. Abanga noted that the suspects returned to his mining site again on Monday, February 2, 2026, demanding money from him.
According to him, the suspects again met his workers, who called him to the site. Upon his arrival, he met the two suspects, who allegedly warned him to leave the community if he wanted to stay alive.
While engaging with them, the victim secretly sent a message to the Nkawie Police Command for assistance.
A police team led by ASP Noah Yakpe swiftly responded to the distress call and arrested the two suspects at the scene.
The suspects are currently in police custody assisting with investigations, while efforts are ongoing to arrest their accomplices who remain at large.
A reliable source indicated that the suspects have since been transferred to the Ashanti Regional Police Command in Kumasi for further investigations.
