Ballot boxes for December polls
Two out of the six missing ballot boxes of the Electoral Commission (EC) meant to be used for the December 7 polls, have been found at Apowa in the Ahanta West Constituency of the Western Region.
The six boxes, which were part of about 44 being transported from the Western Regional head office of the EC in Sekondi to the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Constituency, allegedly fell off the vehicle conveying them.
The two boxes were said to have been found by a hairdresser residing at Apowa on Tuesday, November 22, 2016 at about 2:30 pm.
Janet, the lady who found the boxes, narrated that she saw them falling off a speeding pick-up that was heading towards Agona Nkwanta, capital of the Ahanta West District.
She indicated that later she saw some school children planning to take the boxes and so she asked one of her apprentices to go for the boxes in anticipation that the owner would return for them.
“So I kept the boxes in my shop until Monday morning when I heard on radio that some boxes were missing,” she indicated.
Janet indicated that with assistance by friends and journalists, she took the ballot boxes – one of which had been broken – to the Kwesimintsim police station.
Later, the Deputy Western Regional Director of the EC, Godwin Tawiah Okley, visited the Kwesimintsim police station and confirmed that the items were among the new EC ballot boxes for the 2016 general election.
They (boxes) are now in the custody of the Kwesimintsim police pending further investigations.
