Ahbenaa Birago
Two women have been remanded into custody by a Circuit Court in Adenta for allegedly making inflammatory statements against President John Mahama in the aftermath of the helicopter crash that killed eight (8) Ghanaians on August 6, 2025.
The two, Priscilla Duah Birago, a 29-year-old National Service person, and Charity Dede Tetteh, a 29-year-old beautician, have been charged with conspiracy to commit a crime, and offensive conduct conducive to breaches of the peace, contrary to Sections 23(1) and 207 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
According to court documents, the two women indicated in a live stream on TikTok that they “would have been happier if the President, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama was involved in the helicopter crash and dwarfs had eaten him up, and that a lot of people are dying under his tenure of office.”
The plea of the accused persons was not taken. The prosecutor, Chief Inspector Maxwell Lanyo, prayed the court to remand them pending further investigations.
The court, presided over by Mrs. Angela Attachie, taking into account the circumstances of the issue and the prosecutor’s request, remanded the two to reappear on September 2, 2025.
Prosecution’s brief fact indicates that Birago disseminated the inflammatory remarks on her TikTok account under the name ‘Abena Birago.’
It further pointed out that the two women were arrested by law enforcement officers following investigations into the matter.
It added that a forensic capture of the livestream has been obtained as evidence.
‘Unlawful Detention’
Meanwhile, their lawyer, Enoch Afoakwah has described the detention of the two women as unlawful, pointing out that the two had been detained by the police for 96 hours – well beyond the 48 hours required by the constitution before their arraignment.
“Our clients’ detention beyond the 48-hour constitutional limit is unlawful. Yet the court has given its blessings to this without taking their pleas or considering their health conditions,” he told reporters.
