A total of 234,707 farmers in the North East Region have benefitted from the President Nana Akufo-Addo-led government’s flagship Programme, the Planting for Food and Jobs.
Minister for the North East Region, Solomon Boar, made this known in Accra on Tuesday, November 24, 2020, making a presentation at the Information Ministry’s Nation Building Updates.
The 11th edition of the Nation Building Updates was held under the theme: Rebuilding the Ghanaian Economy.
The Minister said “172.8 metric tons of fertilizers have been distributed to farmers in the Region.”
According to the Minister, the North East Region “is basically agrarian with a total land size of 10,484 kmsq.”
However, he said, only 27% was under cultivation.
He stated that the construction of the Pwalugu Multi-purpose Dam and Irrigation project was expected to provide a 24,000 hectares of irrigable land for all year round farming in the North East Region.
He noted that a total of 3,591 female beneficiaries have been employed under the Planting for Export and Rural Development Programme.
According to him, some 2000 birds were distributed to 200 farmers in Chereponi, Bunkpurugu, East Mamprusi, Mamprugu-Moagduri and West Mamprusi.
