The deceased being carried away by the police while residents wail
Residents of Morkordze in the Agave traditional area in the South Tongu District of the Volta Region are still in a state of shock and mourning, following the death of three of their neighbours.
The three, who are members of the same family, are reported to have died at about 8:45pm after they had been electrocuted when it was heavily raining in the area last Monday. The sad incident occurred in the night.
The three who have been identified as a grandmother, Yaa Gayi, 50 with two grandchildren – Mawulolo Dofey, nine and Morkporkpor Dofey, seven – were said to have been electrocuted by a live-wire whose insulation (rubber coating) had peeled off.
Confirming the incident, the assemblyman of the area, who identified himself as George Asafo, narrated that the three had their roof ripped off, with their room almost flooding as a result of the heavy downpour. Â They were in search of shelter when the incident happened.
Another resident told DAILY GUIDE that the three who were in their kitchen at the time the rain began were forced to move from there to their bedroom for shelter after the wind that accompanied the rain had ripped off the roofing sheet of their kitchen.
Being battered by the rain in the kitchen, they decided to move out and walk in the water, not knowing what could befall them. Unknown to them, the water through which they were walking to seek shelter had a live cable lying beneath it.
Unfortunately for them, their journey to safety ended up in electrocution resulting in their untimely death.
DAILY GUIDE sources from the police in the area have confirmed the incident and indicated that the bodies have been deposited at the Sogakofe Government Hospital, awaiting autopsy.
Attempts to reach the South Tongu District Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) have proved futile as he couldn’t be reached.
