$350,000 Landfill Site Nears Completion

Osei Assibey Antwi

Barring any last-minute hitches, the first phase of the rehabilitation of the Faecal Sludge Treatment Plant (FSTP) at the Oti Landfill Site will be completed by the end of April.

The massive project is being executed ostensibly to enhance the treatment of refuse that is dumped at the site on a daily basis from various parts of the city.

The first phase of the project, which is valued at a staggering $350,000, is the brainchild of the Kumasi Mayor, Osei Assibey Antwi, who assumed office at a time when the landfill site was in great distress.

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) boss encouraged the Water and Sanitation for the Urban Poor, an international Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), to sponsor the project.

Addressing the media on Monday, Prosper Kotoka, the KMA Director for Waste Management Department, said the project, which is in two phases, would cost the assembly a whopping $755,000.

He said Mr Osei Assibey Antwi assumed office at the time when the ponds for the treatment of waste at the Oti Landfill Site had almost been destroyed.

Mr Kotoka stated that the KMA chief, who is passionate about environmental issues, personally ensured that Water and Sanitation for the Urban Poor assisted the KMA by executing the project.

He said the first phase of the project would involve the construction of head works, settling tanks, dry beds, anaerobic and wetland, among others, stressing that the rehabilitated landfill site would help produce manure for farming.

Mr Kotoka noted that the contractor worked assiduously to complete the project ahead of the initial completion date.

He praised Osei Assibey Antwi for his invaluable contributions that have contributed to the massive transformation of the Oti Landfill Site, which started operations in 2004.
