Four vendors lost their lives and several others sustained varying degrees of injuries when a truck lost its brakes and rammed into vehicles in front of it at the Aburi Junction in Nsawam yesterday.
The truck, which was laden with cement, suffered failed braking system as a result of which the driver lost control, leading to the vehicle crashing into three taxi cabs.
The aftermath of the accident showed a scene of devastation, broken furniture and all manner of stuff.
The Police Motor Transport and Traffic Department (MTTD) personnel and Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) rushed to the scene to offer what assistance they could and to clear the blocked section of the highway.
As soon as the accident occurred, the Nsawam MTTD issued a statement on social media warning about the blocked highway.
According to the police statement, an articulated truck had veered off the road at the Aburi Junction in Nsawam and crashing into three taxi cabs.
The Eastern Regional Police PRO, DSP Ebenezer Tetteh, said the accident occurred at about 11.30am yesterday, adding that the driver of the truck was yet to be identified at the time of composing this report.
The truck, according to him, was heading towards Kumasi from Accra but upon reaching a section of the road at Prince Boateng Memorial School, the vehicle allegedly suffered a brake failure.
The vehicle crashed into others in front and eventually killing food vendors in the general area.
