SOME FORTY-FIVE members of the Heavenslife Global Church are languishing in the cells of the Ashaiman police for breaking the ban on social gathering.
They were caught holding a church service in the afternoon at Lebanon, a suburb of Ashaiman in a clear breach of the Covid-19 social distancing protocols needed to stop the spread of the disease.
There was a bizarre spectacle when the leader of the church called Bishop Dr. Eric Borngreat Aboagye managed to escape through a window when the taskforce from the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly approached them.
According to eyewitnesses, the taskforce entered the premises of the church and asked all the worshippers to follow them to the police station for disregarding the social distancing protocols.
They said by the time they realized, the pastor had escaped through the window and left his car and the congregation behind.
Moses Ayariga, a member of the assembly’s taskforce, confirmed the incident and said they marched all the recalcitrant church members to the Ashaiman Police Station and detained them.
He said a car belonging to the pastor had been impounded and the police had started investigation into the matter.
He said the assembly would like the police to charge them and send them to court for breaching the directive on public gathering.
