Over 500 Children Attend President’s Party

Elizabeth Sackey addressing the kids

The Greater Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) last Thursday organised a party dubbed ‘President End of The Year Party’ for some selected basic school children within the Greater Accra Region at the Dansoman Children’s Park.

The children were treated to music by a spinning group amidst staging of a sketch on the importance of education.

Exchanging pleasantries with the children at the event grounds, the Greater Accra Regional Deputy Minister, Elizabeth Sackey, who represented Regional Minister Ishmael Ashittey at the event, indicated that children are very important assets any community and nation can possess.

She added that merely having children without proper care and attention leads to an uncertain future for the nation.

“Sadly, however, a lot of children in both rural and urban communities today live under very deplorable conditions such as not having access to health, education, shelter and love,” Madam Sackey explained.

She regretted that in certain communities, children are ill-treated while others are sold into slavery with others migrating to the cities and other urban communities and eventually becoming children.

According to her, abuses that children suffer are often perpetrated by supposed loved ones, whereas these abuses mostly take the form of assault, sexual abuse, wilful neglect, physical and mental torture.

The deputy minister assured that government is poised at turning the situation around with the rolling out of a number of policy interventions to bring children into focus.

She called on civil society groups on child rights and religious groups to intensify public education on strengthening the family system and structures of child protection, survival and development.

Madam Sackey also called for a concerted effort to campaign against the scourge of HIV/AIDS.
