9 Democracy Hub Protesters Granted Bail

In a significant development, the Accra High Court has granted bail to nine Democracy Hub protesters, including 26-year-old lawyer Elorm Ababio, who were arrested for allegedly participating in a demonstration against illegal mining, popularly known as Galamsey.

The nine protesters were granted GHC70,000 bail each with two sureties.

Background

The protesters were part of a larger group of 54 individuals who were rounded up by the Police for participating in the demonstration.

The protest was aimed at highlighting the devastating effects of Galamsey on the environment and communities.

Conditions of Bail

As part of their bail conditions, the nine protesters are required to deposit their Ghana cards and report weekly to the Police until the final determination of their case.

Previous Developments

Earlier reports indicated that Ama Governor and other protesters were remanded in jail for two weeks over the Galamsey protest.

However, the latest development marks a significant shift in the case.

Human Rights Concerns

The arrest and detention of the protesters had raised concerns about human rights violations in Ghana.

The granting of bail is seen as a positive step towards upholding the rights of citizens to peaceful protest.

Ongoing Campaign Against Galamsey

The protest is part of a broader campaign to stop Galamsey in Ghana.

The issue has been a contentious one, with many calling for urgent action to address the environmental and social impacts of illegal mining.
