The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced that a special delegates conference will be held on August 26, 2023, to select five candidates for the party’s presidential primary, scheduled for November 4, 2023.
According to the party’s rules, if more than five aspirants qualify to contest, a special electoral college will be convened to choose the final five candidates. Currently, there are 10 aspirants who have filed to contest, and the party has cleared all to contest.
The vetting committee’s report had been released on Monday, July 10, 2023. As it stands, Kennedy Agyapong, Alan Kyerematen, and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia are considered the frontrunners among the five candidates who are likely to easily pass through the first hurdle of the race on August 26.
The other aspirants include Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, Boakye Agyarko, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku, Joe Ghartey, Francis Addai-Nimoh, and Ernest Kwadwo Poku.
There are indications that Bawumia, Kyerematen, and Agyapong have already cleared the first hurdle and are now waiting for two candidates from the remaining seven to join them for the November 4th primary.
A summary of the delegates list that will attend the Super Delegates Conference on August 26, 2023, has been released.
The electoral college composition includes all Constituency Chairmen (275), all Regional Executives (272), all NPP Members of Parliament (137), Regional Representatives to the National Council (60), Council of Elders (30), Founding Members/Fathers (123), Reps from the Women’s Wing (3), Rep from the Youth Wing (3), Reps from the Nasara Wing (3), three reps from each of the 25 international branches (75), all National Officers (24), all Former National Officers (40), the President, Former Presidents, All Regional Ministers (14), Ministers (7), National Council of Elders (33), Directors (9), Special Organs (9), External branches (20), and National Council committee chair (2).
This extensive and diverse group of 961 special delegates will have the responsibility of casting their votes to select the five candidates who will represent the NPP in the November 4th primary.
As the race intensifies, all eyes will be on the special delegates’ conference on August 26, 2023, to see which five candidates will emerge as the frontrunners in the NPP’s quest for the presidential seat.
