5 Dead At Trade Fair Gas Explosion

Scenes from the explosion

A gas station located between the Labadi Cemetery and the Trade Fair Centre in Accra yesterday caught fire following a gas explosion, killing five people.

The explosion also left 12 people severely injured, sending residents running helter skelter.

Narrating the incident to Citi News, an eyewitness, Joseph Quaye Amoo said, “I was sitting opposite the Kpogas furniture area when all of a sudden, I heard a very loud explosion and I turned back and saw a huge flame, a huge furnace so everybody started running…”

He was, however, uncertain about what might have caused the fire but suggested that “either a car engine or an ignition might have lit up the whole flame.”

Five people are said have been burnt beyond recognition at the Louis Gas Station.

The owner was killed some years ago by suspected armed robbers.

The fire, which is said to have started about 6pm at the gas station near the Zenith University College, also gutted properties which run into thousands of cedis.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) deployed three fire tenders to put out the fire.

The raging blaze was so intense that the fire fighters had to go for a refill of some of their tanks to fight the fire.
