Mawuli Senior High School
Tension is brewing in Mawuli School, one of the best senior high schools in the Volta Region, as some teachers and students have expressed worry over what they described as ‘poor management of the school.’
The teachers, who did not want to be mentioned, levelled a litany of allegations against the headmaster, Tawiah Aggor popularly known as K.T. Aggor.
According to them, since the headmaster took over the school about a year ago, its challenges have gone from bad to worse while the little successes chalked have all dissipated.
They have therefore called on the headmaster to resign voluntarily or the Evangelical Presbyterian Church and the Old Mawuli Students’ Union (OMSU) would ensure that he was taken out of the school as soon as possible to save it from further deterioration.
Water Shortage
The water situation of the school, according to this paper’s sources, has become one of the greatest concerns as students are now depending on rationed water which is woefully inadequate. This has caused serious sanitation problems as students are unable to flash excreta from the water closets and clean their bathrooms and urinals.
Students are unable to use the toilet facilities and this has been compounded with the absence of chemicals and detergents to clean these facilities. House prefects and house masters who corroborated the situation, were worried that the school administration had refused to supply the various houses with chemicals and detergents, despite several pleas.
Students are worried that despite the over 3,000 students paying GH¢10.00 per head in the boarding house, detergents are not provided. The house dues which used to be allocated to the house masters for smooth running of the various houses have reportedly been taken over by the administration since the new headmaster took over, a house master lamented.
The situation has led to most students resorting to bathing outside and attending nature’s call along the fringes of the school park and the ‘evil forest,’ a popular bush near the school.
Congestion
There is congestion as the number of students in the boarding house far outweighs the facilities available. Although the school has 10 houses, each of them has about 300 students instead of about 200.
The congestion situation, coupled with bed bug infestation, is so bad that many students sleep on the corridors of their dormitories, the forecourts of their houses and classrooms, with some of them sleeping on the shoulders of the school field. The once beautiful lawns of Trost House and the like have become bare grounds – an evidence of the prevalence of students sleeping on the lawns.
Poor Resource Management
Most of the teachers, particularly the senior level ones, alleged that the headmaster is autocratic and not transparent. They revealed that the current water situation in the school is an example of such attitudes. They alleged that Mr Tawiah Aggor, who is to retire in May this year, has rather prioritised the renovation of his house and those of his two deputies as well as the tarring of his compound instead of the payment of debts owed the Ghana Water Company.
The teachers indicated, “This is just a tip of the iceberg. If the headmaster doesn’t leave we will provide damming evidence of corruption, details of the gay incident, procurement anomalies and many things.”
Headmaster Keeps Mute
Since the gay incident in the school became public, the headmaster has decided not to speak to DAILY GUIDE.
He refused to pick several calls or respond to text messages sent to his phone.
