The damaged tents
A heavy downpour brought the May Day celebrations in the Volta Region to an abrupt end, as workers ran to seek shelter in classrooms of the Keta Senior High School (SHS).
The rainfall, which started immediately after the various worker unions had marched past, lasted for about an hour and disrupted the programmes for the day.
The event, which started beautifully, was cut short by the rainfall, as the Regional Minister, Dr. Archiebald Letsa, his deputy, Maxwell Blagogee, some Municipal and District Coordinating Directors, as well as Heads of Departments all sought refuge.
The heavy winds scattered canopies and chairs at the venue.
The programme, which was supposed to start at 9am, eventually started at about 11am, leaving many people to question the delay of the programme.
The rainfall, however, did not deter some of the enthusiastic workers, who played and danced to some ‘Borbor’ tunes.
ECG protest concession agreement
Earlier, workers of Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) held a mini demonstration to express their dissatisfaction with the Millennium Challenge Compact II under which ECG would be privatized.
The ECG concession compact, which was signed last year, is aimed at the tackling the commercial losses of the ECG.
It also seeks to reduce poverty and open the country’s energy sector for investment.
The management and workers of the ECG contend that the concession would lead to job losses and bring untold hardship to Ghanaians.
The workers held placards, some of which read, ‘Stop ECG Concession Now,’ ‘Politicians Leave ECG Alone,’ ‘ECG concession will bring untold hardship onto Ghanaians,’ among others.
