The late Lance Corporal Sampson Yaw Arthur’s wife in tears
The Northern Regional Police Command has made a donation of GH¢10,000 to the family of the police officer who was reportedly shot by personnel of a (police) patrol team on grounds of mistaken identity on the Kintampo-Tamale Highway.
The officer, Lance Corporal Sampson Yaw Arthur, is said to have been escorting a Metro Mass Transit bus with registration number GE 6402-14.
DAILY GUIDE gathered that the patrol team received a rather distress call from passengers on that fateful day at about 2:30 am about a robbery incident between Kawampe and Gulumpe and upon reaching the scene, they found 20 vehicles parked in a row being searched by the armed robbers.
Realizing the presence of the patrol team, the armed robbers opened fire on them and the police also retaliated, which led to the shooting of the cop.
Three persons, including an eight-year-old girl, Cynthia Ayaaba; Kwabena Sarfa, 44 and Guruson Bashiru, 28, sustained various degrees of gunshot wounds and were rushed to the Kintampo Government Hospital but the police officer was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.
Eleven empty AA shells, one AK 47 riffle with registration number 172194 and 34 rounds of ammunition were retrieved from the bush. The riffle was believed to be that which Lance Corporal Sampson possessed.
The regional police commander, ACP Patrick Adusei Sarpong, paid a visit to the bereaved family to express his condolences and also to present some items to the wife and the children of the late officer.
He said the Inspector General of Police had wished to come but other equally important matters could not permit him to do so; however on his behalf, an amount of GH¢5,000 was donated to the wife and the children.
Unique Insurance, also donated GH¢5,000 to the bereaved family.
ACP Patrick Adusei Sarpong remarked, “Unique Insurance Company has shown their love and appreciation for the work of the police force through this donation. It must be stated clearly that the amount presented to the family by the insurance company is not the accumulated amount of the insurance of the late officer,”
Meanwhile, the family is yet to decide on a date for the burial of the late police officer.
