A Scene At The Site
The Ministry of Transport has begun the construction of an ultramodern bus terminal at the old Kinbu Bus Station in Accra.
The project, which is expected to be completed in about 15 months, is part of the Ministry’s initiatives to upgrade bus terminals across the country to improve transportation.
The contractors have begun the demolition of the old structures to pave way for the construction of the facility.
The four-acre land, which is a property of the Public Works Department (PWD), was acquired by the Transport Ministry last year for the project.
Speaking to journalists, Gloria Holm-Graves, Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Ministry, disclosed that her outfit seeks to ensure that both intra-city and inter-city road transport services are well catered for.
She indicated that “we are able to provide the required services to the citizenry and ensure that people are comfortable, people are safe and are able to go about their duties without challenges.”
She added that the Ministry is liaising with the various stakeholders to ensure the completion of the project on time without any challenges.
Meanwhile, some occupants of the land are livid about the Ministry’s decision to demolish the old structures without any notice.
The old structures were primarily occupied by hundreds of encroachers and some staff of the PWD.
When DAILY GUIDE visited the construction site, hundreds of the affected squatters were seen stranded behind the locked gates, with police officers deployed there to provide security.
Some of them, who spoke to this paper, pleaded with government to help relocate them and offer some assistance.
Gloria Holm-Graves has, however, denied allegations that occupants were not warned prior to the demolition exercise.
She said eviction notices were served on the affected persons in December last year and gave assurance that the stakeholders would ensure that those who acquired the place legally would be compensated.
