The Attacked Police Patrol Vehicle
Some police personnel in Tamale, the Northern Regional capital, have been attacked by residents of Gbulahagu, near Datoyili, when they (police) attempted to save an alleged witch.
The purported witch, 35-year-old Memunatu Nindoo, was attacked by residents of the community for allegedly being a witch.
According to the residents, her existence in the community had brought bad omen to the area and so did not want her there. Her home was burnt down.
DAILY GUIDE gathered that on Sunday at about 8:30 pm, Abdulai Abdul Karim accompanied by Alhassan Iddrisu, came to the Tamale police station and reported that their aunt, Memunatu Nindoo, had been accused of possessing witchcraft and about to be lynched by some people at Gbulahagu, near Datoyili.
The patrol team, led by Inspector Kwafo, was immediately dispatched to the scene and on arrival, they met the victim in a burnt thatched house with bruises and surrounded by people who were consoling her.
In the process to rescue her from the house, there was total blackout in the village. Sensing danger, the team decided to return to base but on their way back, they were attacked by the villagers with stones and other lethal weapons.
The residents reportedly fired guns and throwing stones. After the road had been cleared, SO 54015 Constable Anthony T. Blay could not be found.
The team subsequently returned to the station. Â None of the four men, including the driver, was injured.
Seven men from RDF, led by C/Inspector G. Essel, were dispatched to rescue the aforementioned constable at Datoyili.
At about 11:15 pm, the RDF team returned to the station with the constable. He sustained minor injuries and complained of body pains and was subsequently sent to the Tamale Central Hospital for treatment.
The Northern Regional Police PRO, ASP Mohammed Yussif Tanko, who confirmed the incident to DAILY GUIDE, said the residents attacked the police in their patrol van, registered GP 3115 with AK 47 guns and clubs.
He indicated that the residents later blocked the main road leading to Tamale Township from the community.
Meanwhile, Memunatu Nindoo has been taken to a secure place but none of the police officers sustained any injuries.
No arrests had been made by the police as at the time of filing this report.
