Granddaughter Seller Caged

A 63-year-old driver, who allegedly attempted to sell his granddaughter, has been remanded into custody by an Accra circuit court.

The suspect, Midawo Agbodzi, was arrested by the police on February 22, 2018 at Cantonments in the Greater Accra Region, where he allegedly attempted to sell his grandchild for GH¢100,000.

He is reported to have confided in a friend about his plan and the friend-turned-informant lured him into selling the child to a police officer who posed as an interested buyer, leading to his (suspect’s) arrest.

Agbodzi was put before the court for attempting to commit crime, to wit: human trafficking.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge and was remanded to reappear on March 12, 2018.

Superintendent of Police George Amega told the court that the complainant is ASP Wisdom Kwame Bosso, an officer stationed at the Police Hospital.

He aid on February 18, 2018, the suspect went to his friend who is a bookman at the Kinbu lorry park and told him friend about his intension to sell his grandchild in either Ghana or Nigeria at GH¢100,000 because of financial constraints.

Supt. Amega said that the suspect was encouraged by his friend not to take the child to Nigeria for sale because he could get him a buyer right here in Ghana.

According to the prosecutor, on February 22, 2018, the suspect brought the victim, who was living with his (suspect’s) sister at Tadzevu in the Volta Region, under the pretext of sending her to school.

He told the court that upon his arrival in Accra, the suspect called his friend to take him to the prospective buyer and the friend, realising how eager Agbodzi was, lured him to the Cantonments Police Hospital where they met the police officer, unknown to the suspect.

He said at the hospital, the suspect bargained with the complainant (police officer) and agreed on a price of GH¢100,000.

Agbodzi was arrested in the process and taken to the Cantonments police station.

Supt. Amega added that the matter was transferred to the Anti-human Trafficking Unit and the child has since been taken for rehabilitation.
