Samuel Kumah after the assault
Samuel Kumah, a journalist and blogger, was allegedly subjected to severe beatings by some police officers at Stonebwoy’s BHIM concert on Friday, December 28.
Samuel Kumah, known in showbiz circles as Sammy Kay, was reportedly filming footballer Asamoah Gyan and Efia Odo when a police officer asked him to stop and delete the video, but he declined, explaining that he has a good relationship with the footballer.
The police officer, together with his colleagues, were alleged to have proceeded to attack Sammy Kay, leading to a scuffle which got Sammy injured.
He was rushed to the emergency ward at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra.
He was reportedly discharged from the hospital around 4:00am Saturday after he was examined and given treatment for the injuries sustained.
Samuel, in a 3news report, earlier served a notice that he was going to pursue the matter.
Also, a statement from the Arts & Tourism Writers Association of Ghana (ATWAG) condemned the alleged brutality against the journalist and the association.
“ATWAG is taking steps to liaise with the employers of Sammy Kay (the Despite Group of Companies) to see how best to handle the matter,” it stated.
According to ATWAG, the attack on Sammy was unprovoked, as he was doing his work rightfully.
The association also observed that reports of police officers brutalising citizens in their line of duty in recent times have become rampant and has, therefore, called on the government and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to bring an end to it.
