Chief Wants Overstayed Police Officers Transferred

Pimampim Yaw Kabresy

THE Omanhene of Yeji and President of the Brong Ahafo Regional House of Chiefs, Pimampim Yaw Kabresy, has appealed to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) through the Bono East Regional Minister to transfer all police officers who have overstayed their posts from the Pru East District.

He claimed that some of the police officers had become ‘familiar’ with some criminals in the area, for which reason they are not able to clamp down hard on incidents like highway robbery.

He said armed robbers were operating in the Pru East, Pru West, Atebubu Amantin and Sene East and West districts with impunity, and the police were becoming less helpful.

The chief made the request to the IGP when the Bono East Regional Minister, Kofi Amoakohene, embarked on a working visit to his area on a familiarization tour of the major towns to explain his plans to the chiefs.

Pimampim Yaw Kabresy said:  “Traders are being robbed day in, day out probably because of the bad nature of our roads. But let me also say it is because some of the police officers posted here have overstayed their posts and become familiar with the people.”

“Some have even married here and fathered children so are familiar with the armed robbers. They cannot arrest them because they know them. I am, therefore, appealing to you (regional minister) to impress upon the IGP to transfer those who have overstayed their posts, not the new ones.”

He bemoaned inadequate number of officers in the district and also appealed to the Police Administration to post more to the area.

The further said that chieftaincy disputes in the area were on the rise and appealed to the regional minister to use what he called ‘tact’ to help solve the problem, without taking sides in the issues.

At Prang in the Pru West District, the paramount chief of the area, Nana Kwadwo Nyarko III, appealed to the Bono East Regional Co-ordinating Council to mediate the impasse between the people of Abaese and Prang so that assembly members from Abaese could attend assembly meetings.

He informed the minister that since Prang was named the Pru West District capital, the paramount chief of Abaese had allegedly invoked curses on assembly members from his paramount area.

The minister acknowledged the concerns and promised to work assiduously to ensure prevalence of peace in the area.
