SOLARTAXI, a local automobile company, has outdoored its new fleet of electric vehicles (EVs) for the Ghanaian market.
The vehicles, which come in various types and models, including the hatchback, sedan and SUV, are the first of their kind to be introduced for commercial use in the country.
At a press briefing held on Monday at their station at Laterbiokorshie in Accra, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of SolarTaxi, Jorge Appiah, stated that the EVs came as “an innovative transportation alternative” with the potential of mitigating climate change while providing affordable transportation for Ghanaians.
“By leveraging the energy from the sun and innovativeness of the shared economy, EVs reduce carbon emissions, cost of delivery and transport services to individuals and businesses across the country,” he remarked.
He also announced that the company was currently providing leasing services for their electric cars for as low as GH¢800 for the hatchback, GH¢900 for the sedan and GH¢1,000 for the SUV monthly.
Delivery of car rentals, he indicated, would commence on September 28 this year, whereas outright sales have already begun.
The hatchback is being sold at GH¢100,000 whereas the SUV and sedan vehicles are sold at GH¢200,000 and GH¢120,000 respectively.
Taking journalists on a tour of the features of the vehicles, Mary Adwoa Kudaya and Belinda Akaba, both Mechanical and Electrical Engineers respectively at SolarTaxi iterated that maintenance of the EVs was quite less costly as compared to other vehicles on the market.
They said with their EVs customers would have no need for oil change or spend on fuel while cruising.
Each vehicle has a drive motor controller installed in it which regulates and controls the temperature, voltage and other conditions of the cars while in motion thereby negating the situation of overheating.
Customers, they said, would only have to tap power from the national grid or better still get solar panels to charge the cars with.
The hatchbacks and sedan take maximum six hours to charge fully whereas the SUV take eight hours to charge.
