Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa
Zimbabwean President, Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, has observed that the United States (US) lacked moral right to sanction his country and other nations around the world in the name of promoting democracy.
He made the observation on Thursday, January 7, 2021 after Wednesday’s riot at the U.S. Capitol by some supporters of President Donald Trump which resulted in five people reportedly losing their lives.
Mr Mnangagwa in a tweet recalled how “Last year, President Trump extended painful economic sanctions placed on Zimbabwe, citing concerns about Zimbabwe’s democracy.”
He stated that “Zimbabwe is, as it always has been, ready to work together as friends and partners with the U.S for the benefit of both our peoples.”
Mr. Mnangagwa once again congratulated U. S President-elect Joe Biden after he was confirmed as the 46th President of the United States.
Last year, President Trump extended painful economic sanctions placed on Zimbabwe, citing concerns about Zimbabwe’s democracy.
Yesterday’s events showed that the U.S. has no moral right to punish another nation under the guise of upholding democracy. These sanctions must end.
