A body of Chinese national believed to be the Captain of a fishing vessel has been retrieved after the vessel, Comforter 2 sunk offshore Elmina in the Central Region.
A search party is underway over the missing 10 persons on board the vessel.
Some 14 sailors of both Ghanaian and Chinese nationalities aboard have been rescued following the incident.
The Western Regional Director of the Fisheries Commission, Joseph Yeboah told Citi Fm that 14 have been rescued with 10 more still missing.
According to him, “The accident happened on Friday afternoon and some two of the sailors managed to swim till they were picked up by a sister vessel around 10pm.
“The vessel went back to the incident place to search and picked some three more sailors plus the Captain, who was then dead. Nine others were picked up by a canoe and were sent to Elmina and later went to Tema. In all, 15 sailors have been recovered with the Captain dead and others injured. There are 10 more sailors still been searched for now.”
The Chinese fishing vessel, MV Comforter 2 sank in the early hours of Friday, May 6, 2022, along the Elmina–Takoradi marine waters.
Its last known position was said to be 46 nautical miles South of Saltpond.
Twenty five crew members were said to be on board including 19 Ghanaians and six Chinese when the incident occurred.
