THE CYLINDER Recirculation Model (CRM), a flagship initiative of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), is set to be rolled out in September 2023, the Authority has announced.
The Cylinder Recirculation Model is a system of distribution of liquified petroleum gas (LPG), especially for domestic use, that would see consumers access cylinders in the comfort of their homes.
The project would be a shift from the current system where consumers own gas cylinders and would have to visit a gas distribution facility to purchase LPG or buy via middle men.
Under this project, consumers only need to have the needed funds to access the branded LPG-filled cylinders that would be distributed by the NPA when operations begin.
The Deputy Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the NPA, Perry Okudzeto, at a media briefing in Accra on Thursday disclosed that the goal of the project was to achieve 50% LPG access to Ghanaians by 2030 as against the current 35% access.
According to him, the NPA, as part of the implementation, would initiate a national recall programme for consumers to submit their existing cylinders and take the branded ones from the NPA.
Mr. Okudzeto also revealed that the Authority, ahead of the rollout, had commissioned a pilot programme with existing infrastructure in the Eastern, Ashanti and Northern regions, and that results were encouraging, paving the way for the national rollout.
He, however, noted that both the current and new systems would run side-by-side for a period until the old system is gradually phased out.
Head of Gas (Commercial) at the NPA, Obed KraineBoachie, in a presentation, stated that four bottling plants would be producing about 80,000 cylinders per day, which is well over the about 50,000 cylinders currently being consumed in the country, together with three cylinder manufacturing companies are all ready for operations.
Consumers would be required to submit their Ghana cards to access a cylinder, the Authority stated.
