The Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives (GCNM) has urged the government and other policymakers to enact policies that will promote and support nurses and midwives to pursue specific areas of interest in order to drive the nursing and midwifery professions in the country.
This, according to the college, will enable nurses and midwives to stay current with global trends while also providing population-specific, disease-specific care rather than generalist care for improved healthcare results.
“Some critical areas that need prompt attention are Critical Care Nursing, Emergency Nursing, Infectious Diseases Nursing, Advanced Midwifery, Neonatal Nursing and Mental Health Nursing. This will also require an appreciable increase in the release of practicing nurses and midwives with paid study leave,” Rector of GCNM, Hannah A.O. Acquah said.
She made this known at the GCNM induction ceremony of 1,542 nurses and midwives who have completed their training in a number of specialised areas.
She, therefore, recommended nurses and midwives to enroll in membership programmes so they can contribute to healthcare delivery at their facility level and assist improve national outcomes.
Prof. Victoria Bam, President of the GCNM, encouraged the government to give the required resources for specialised nursing and midwifery staff to enhance healthcare delivery and patient outcomes.
“Resources are important in enhancing job satisfaction. So we will appeal to the government and other policymakers to provide the necessary resources for nurse and midwife specialists so that they can deliver quality services to improve our health outcomes, as we work towards achieving the Agenda 2030,” she noted.
“It is important, if they mentor them, then the knowledge and expertise they have acquired is being transferred to those who haven’t benefited from the training yet. It enhances the skills of these general nurses and midwives so we can improve the health outcomes of our nation,” she said.
