The Parliamentary primaries of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Evalue-Ajomoro-Gwira constituency of the Western Region expected to take place last Saturday was cancelled over a disagreement over the polling centre.
Some delegates of the party in the constituency vowed not to take part in the parliamentary primaries in the party’s orphan constituency if the exercise was not held at the Municipal capital of Axim.
They asserted that a directive from the General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Koduah Frimpong, indicated that the parliamentary primaries in the orphan constituencies should be organized in the municipal capital of the constituencies.
According to sources, the exercise was scheduled to take place at Gwira-Bamiako, but the Municipal Security Council (MUSEC) advised that the election should be held at a neutral centre in Ellembelle following last week’s demonstrations over the poor development of the Gwira Bamianko area.
Confirming the cancellation of the Evalue-Ajomoro-Gwira NPP Primaries to journalists, the Western Regional NPP Secretary, Okatekyie Amankwa Afrifa, said it has been postponed indefinitely due to polarization in the party caused by a candidate’s attempt to decide where the primaries should be held.
Two candidates, a former MP for the area, Catherine Abelema Afeku, and Justice Kangah, a businessman, are vying to become the NPP parliamentary candidate for the area in the next general elections.
Meanwhile, in the Prestea Huni Valley Constituency, a former MP for the area, Barbara Oteng Gyasi was elected as the Parliamentary candidate. She had 973 votes to beat her only contender, Theophilus Tawiah who had 255.
In the Amenfi Central constituency, Dr. Albert Wiredu Arkoh was elected with 547 votes.
Ernest Frimpong, a business man was elected the parliamentary candidate for Amenfi East with 630 votes.
In the Wassa East constituency, a female legal practitioner, Getrude Effah was elected with 317 votes.
Meanwhile, the constituency primaries for Jomoro and Ellembelle constituencies have been put on hold.
