Illegal Mining Activities Destroy Road

Residents of Aboi Nkwanta near Samreboi in the Amenfi West Municipality of the Western Region have attributed the destruction of a concrete bridge and the deterioration of their main road to Samreboi to the activities of illegal miners.

According to information gathered, the activities of illegal mining close to the main road, coupled with heavy rainfall led to the collapse of the concrete bridge on the road.

Some of the residents therefore constructed a wooden bridge to enable motorists transport passengers and traders from Aboi Nkwanta to and from Samreboi.

According to sources, because most of the illegal mining sites are closer to the road, whenever it rains and the mining pits are full, the water floods the road.

Investigation conducted by DAILY GUIDE revealed that for the past three weeks, those staying very close to the mining site have been experiencing flooding after heavy downpours.

It was also revealed that because of the current deteriorated nature of the main Aboi Nkwanta to Samreboi road, big trucks and other vehicles cannot commute on it, except small cars.

“Where the mining activities are taking place is close to the main road and because there is no way to divert the water in the mining pits when it rains, the water flows through the road and weakens it”, they asserted.

They have therefore pleaded with the authorities to educate the miners on responsibly mining and help address the issue.
