MINISTER FOR Communication and Digitalisation, Mrs. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has taken a tour of some training centres of the Girls- In- ICT programme in the Ashanti Region.

The tour accorded the minister the opportunity to assess the ongoing training for selected girls in basic schools with ICT skills and to interact with them.

The beneficiaries numbering 1000 were taken through a week’s training in coding, cyber security, website development, animation, among others.

The tour took the minister and her entourage to Kumasi Senior High School (SHS), Pentecost SHS, Adventist SHS, Kumasi Anglican SHS and Serwaa Nyarko SHS.

Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful, who is also the Member of Parliament for Ablekuma West, said Girls -In- ICT aims at exposing young girls to opportunities in the ICT sector through mentorship workshops and open day programmes to encourage them to consider professions in ICT.

“We want to demystify ICT education for girls,” the legislator stated.

She also added, “The whole world is going digital and for our young girls also to be able to compete on the national and the global stage, they have to be given the right skills and so we expanded the scope of the girls in ICT programme from a one day programme event to a two week event to train a hundred teachers in every region so that they can go back to their schools and teach and reach the ICT courses that they are teaching in their schools.”

The minister was delighted at the performance of the girls after acquiring basic skills in coding after just a week’s instructions, noting that the short time within which they acquired the skills thrilled her.
