A mixed-team golf event has been approved for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, marking a significant addition to the sport’s Olympic programme. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) executive board confirmed the decision, with the event set to be played at the Riviera Country Club.
The format will feature one team per country, made up of one male and one female golfer drawn from the individual men’s and women’s competitions. The 36-hole contest will span two rounds—foursomes and fourball—and will be held between the men’s and women’s individual events.
This will be the first Olympic team golf event since the 1904 Games in St Louis. Golf returned to the Olympics in 2016 after a 112-year absence, and this new format is expected to boost the sport’s appeal on the global stage.
Executive Director of the International Golf Federation, Antony Scanlon, welcomed the move, noting the enthusiasm of athletes to compete alongside their compatriots. “We’re excited to bring even more attention to our sport through this additional format,” he said.
Team GB’s Justin Rose claimed gold in the men’s event at Rio 2016, while Tommy Fleetwood secured silver at Paris 2024, highlighting the country’s strong presence in recent Olympic golf competitions.
