Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong
The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has fully restored services to the University of Cape Coast (UCC) after the institution complied with its directive regarding the compulsory retirement of Vice Chancellor Professor Johnson Nyarko Boampong.
This move comes just days after GTEC suspended all government-related services to UCC on September 19, citing Prof. Boampong’s alleged refusal to step down. The sanctions affected accreditation processing, payment of salaries, research allowances, GETFund support, recruitment clearances, and other key services.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, September 24, and signed by Acting Director of Corporate Affairs, Jerry Sarfo, GTEC confirmed that UCC has now been reinstated on its website as a fully accredited institution.
“Please be informed that the University of Cape Coast (UCC) has been put back on the GTEC website as a fully accredited institution. We are grateful to the Registrar and management of UCC for their cooperation during the period,” the statement read.
The statement also confirmed that Prof. Boampong had taken the matter to court, but did not indicate whether the case was ongoing or resolved.
The restoration of services marks a resolution to a dispute that had sparked protests and criticism from UCC staff unions, who had described the sanctions as “unlawful” and “a direct attack” on their livelihoods.
