Police in Kumasi have arrested a 21-year-old man, identified as Baker, who was on the run for allegedly stabbing his close friend, Kwadwo Bright, to death during a misunderstanding over a plastic chair.

Baker was picked up on Saturday, September 20, 2025, at his hideout in the Kumasi Railway Market, where he had allegedly been concealed by his father to avoid arrest. The father was also arrested after police discovered that he had been hiding his son in a store and secretly sending him large amounts of food, which raised suspicion among traders.

“Off late we saw some unusual movements, the father has also been sending lots of food into his shop, raising suspicion,” a witness said and added, “We honestly had no idea the boy was hiding in the store until police officers stormed the area to effect the arrest.”

The arrest brings closure to a two-week manhunt launched after the September 4, 2025 incident at Ashanti New Town (Ashtown), where Bright, 20, was fatally stabbed.

According to eyewitnesses, the two friends had quarreled over a plastic chair at a snooker game centre. Though the misunderstanding was believed to have been settled, Baker later pulled out a sharp object and stabbed Bright in the neck.

The victim’s mother, Georgina Yeboah, who rushed to the scene after hearing shouts, recalled finding her son lying helpless in a pool of blood. Bright was rushed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, but doctors confirmed his death shortly after arrival.

Both Baker and his father are currently in police custody, assisting with investigations. The tragic case has sparked sorrow and outrage in Ashtown, with many residents demanding swift justice.
