Dr. Wuaku Heads Ghana Sports Fund

Dr. David Kofi Mawuvi Wuaku

President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Dr. David Kofi Mawuvi Wuaku as the Administrator of the newly established Ghana Sports Fund, entrusting the seasoned banker and financial expert with steering a key initiative aimed at reshaping sports funding in the country.

Dr. Wuaku brings over three decades of experience in banking and financial management to the role, a background many stakeholders believe will be crucial in tackling the long-standing financial difficulties that have hampered Ghana’s sports sector.

A New Direction for Sports Funding

For years, the Ministry of Sports and Recreation has depended largely on central government allocations and occasional philanthropic support to finance sporting activities. However, these sources have often proven inadequate, with funding shortfalls delaying or derailing major, capital-intensive projects.

The Ghana Sports Fund Bill, 2025, highlights that this piecemeal approach has limited Ghana’s ability to fully harness sports as a catalyst for sustainable development. In response, the new Fund is designed to offer a structured, professionally managed and sustainable financing mechanism for the sector.

As an administrator, Dr. Wuaku will head the Fund’s secretariat, manage its day-to-day operations, execute decisions of the governing Board, and ensure accountability in how resources are mobilised and utilised.

Pledge for Transparency, Accountability

Reacting to his appointment, Dr. Wuaku underscored his commitment to running the Fund with the highest standards of transparency and accountability.

“This is not just about managing funds—it’s about restoring hope to our athletes, our coaches, and everyone who believes in the transformative power of sports,” he said.

Drawing on his extensive financial background, he emphasised the importance of strong systems and clear procedures.

“Ghanaians deserve to see how their resources are being used to develop sports. We will establish clear processes, regular reporting mechanisms, and open channels of communication with all stakeholders,” he added.

Dr. Wuaku expressed confidence that with sound financial management and strategic investment, Ghana could once again rise as a dominant sporting force on the continent.

“We have the talent. We have the passion. What we’ve lacked is a sustainable funding structure. That changes now,” he stated.

He further revealed plans to ensure that the Fund supports athletes across all levels, from grassroots initiatives to elite competitors representing the nation on the global stage.

“From community-based programmes to world-class athletes, everyone will have the opportunity to benefit. We are building a system that works for all Ghanaians, not just a privileged few,” he concluded.

The appointment marks a significant step in Ghana’s efforts to professionalise sports financing and build a more resilient and inclusive sporting ecosystem.
