Six individuals, including the widow of the late Member of Parliament (MP) for Ayawaso East Constituency, have picked nomination forms to contest the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primary for the constituency.

As the race to the much anticipated Ayawaso East Constituency by-election, scheduled for March 3, 2026 intensifies, Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed and five others, including the widow of the late MP, Hajia Amina Adam, have picked nomination forms to contest the NDC parliamentary primary.

The four other aspirants to contest in the primary slated for February 7, 2026 are Mohammed Ramne, Mohammed Abdul Salam, Najib Mohammed Sani, and Yakubu Azindow

According to the party, information about all the aspirants would be reviewed after submitting their nomination forms, while vetting will be held today, January 28, 2026.

The late MP for Ayawaso East, Mahama Nasser Toure, passed on at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, resulting in a constitutional requirement for a by-election.

But speaking in an interview with the media after submitting his nomination forms at the Greater Accra Regional Office of the NDC, Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed said serving as a Member of Parliament will be more impactful to the country than his current service to another country, stating that his motivation is driven by a deep sense of commitment to service, not material gain.

According to him, he is urgently needed more in the country, especially in serving the people of Ayawaso East, even though he acknowledged his role as a High Commissioner.

The former Deputy Minister and former Member of Parliament, in an interview with the media, assured constituents of his commitment to serve the people of Ayawaso East with ‘all his heart and strength’ if given the opportunity.

“There will be vetting for all the candidates who have presented their documents. Those who think and continue to ask why Baba Jamal is coming back and leaving Nigeria as a High Commissioner to take the title of Honourable.

“Let me make it clear: my motivation is to serve not materialistic; it is humanism and service to the people. When duty calls, where you are needed more, you need to respond. I am responding to the several calls by my people to come down and serve them,” he added.

Baba Jamal served as a Member of Parliament for the Akwatia Constituency in the Eastern Region from 2013 to 2017, before losing his seat in the 2016 election. Baba Jamal garnered 309 and lost to Nasser Toure, who obtained votes 452 votes in the NDC’s 2024 Ayawaso East parliamentary primary.

Although the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has expressed interest to field a candidate to contest the by-election in an area regarded as the stronghold of the NDC, given the results obtained in previous general elections, the party is yet to announce its candidate.
