Family, friends and fans of legendary Ghanaian musician Ebo Taylor are gathering today for his one-week observance in Saltpond.

The memorial ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, March 14, 2026, and will begin at 6:30 a.m. at Wesley Methodist Church – Saltpond.

According to the family, mourners will proceed to the next part of the observance after the church gathering. Attendees have been asked to wear black for the ceremony.

The event is expected to draw musicians, members of the creative arts industry, fans and relatives who want to honour one of Ghana’s most influential music icons.

Ebo Taylor died on February 7, 2026, at the age of 90. Widely respected as a guitarist, composer and bandleader, he played a major role in shaping Ghana’s highlife music and spreading its influence across Africa and beyond.

Born Deroy Taylor in Cape Coast in 1936, he rose to prominence in the late 1950s and early 1960s when highlife dominated the country’s music scene.

During a career spanning more than six decades, he developed a unique sound that blended Ghanaian rhythms with jazz, funk, soul, and early Afrobeat.

Some of his popular songs include “Heaven,” “Odofo Nyi Akyiri Biara,” and “Love and Death,” which later introduced new generations of listeners to his music around the world.

As preparations continue for his final funeral rites, tributes from fans and musicians continue to celebrate the legacy of a man many consider one of the architects of modern West African popular music.
