A flooded area in Accra
Accra residents living in flood-prone communities like Kasoa, Accra Central, Asylum Down, Circle, Dansoman Junction, Weija, Kaneshie, Adabraka, and Tema have been displaced after a three-hour heavy rains yesterday, Sunday, March 29, 2026.
The floods, submerged their homes, and vehicles among other properties, as many of these victims called for urgent emergency rescue operations.
Major roads, including the Accra-Kumasi highway and the Kasoa-Winneba highway became impassable, leaving vehicles stuck while at other locations, traffic built up as drivers struggled to navigate through the floodwaters.
Power Outage
Few minutes before the rains, many communities in the Greater Accra Region were hit with unannounced power outage. The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) later issued a notice to that effect, indicating reason leading to the dawn power outage.
According to ECG, the outages were primarily due to faults triggered by the rainstorm, including lightning, thunder, and system detections that caused temporary interruptions (transient tripping) or permanent faults.
They acknowledged that various parts of the Greater Accra Region reported outages, with reports of localised faults. ECG expressed regret for the inconvenience and stated that their engineers are working to repair faults and restore power.
It further cautioned the public to stay away from fallen or sagging electrical conductors during rainy days, as they can be fatal.
Customers have also been urged to report localised outages, fallen poles, or sagging wires to the ECG Call Center on 0302-611611, the nearest ECG office, or via social media channels (@ECGghOfficial).
Flood Measures
The Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, prior to the rains outlined steps to address flooding in the capital.
Speaking before Parliament’s Government Assurances Committee in Accra, Mr. Adjei said the Ministry is implementing a comprehensive flood mitigation strategy, with dredging works set to begin in vulnerable communities.
“Mr Chairman, we are working closely with the relevant agencies to implement a comprehensive flood mitigation strategy,” he said, adding that the government is committed to reducing the impact of seasonal floods.
The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) and regional authorities also conducted a demolition of unauthorised structures in flood-prone areas like the Kpeshie Lagoon and Awudome (North Kaneshie) to prevent flooding before the rainy season.
