The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) responded to multiple emergencies across the Eastern, Greater Accra, and Volta regions over the weekend, containing two major fire outbreaks and rescuing victims trapped in a road traffic accident.
At Brekuso in the Eastern Region, a commercial fire broke out at the Ghana Digital Terrestrial Transmission Centre on Saturday, March 28, 2026.
The GNFS reported that the blaze started in a container housing solar inverter batteries, which quickly became engulfed in flames.
Firefighters from the Anyaa Fire Station were dispatched to the scene and managed to bring the situation under control despite the intensity of the fire, which was worsened by lithium battery components.
Their swift intervention prevented the flames from spreading to other critical installations at the facility. No injuries or fatalities were recorded, while investigations are ongoing to determine the cause.
In a separate incident the same day, fire crews battled a blaze at a wood market at Ofankor Muse in the Greater Accra Region.
The fire was reported in the early hours at about 2:04 a.m., prompting a rapid response from the Amasaman Fire Station, with support from teams from Anyaa, Madina, and the Ghana Armed Forces Fire Service.
The fire destroyed several wooden structures and large quantities of wood products, and also partially damaged a maltese machine and a maize feed mill.
However, coordinated firefighting efforts helped to contain the blaze and protect adjoining structures from being consumed.
Personnel from the Ghana Police Service and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) provided additional support at the scene.
As with the Brekuso incident, no casualties were recorded, and the cause remains under investigation.
Meanwhile, in the Volta Region, firefighters from the Peki Fire Station successfully rescued two persons trapped in a crash at Anyensu near Peki on the Kpeve–Asikuma road on Friday, March 27.
The accident involved a Howo trailer transporting 340 sacks of dried cassava from Kpandai to Juapong. The vehicle overturned, leaving the carriage extensively damaged and the head detached from the main body.
The driver, 28-year-old Enoch Amo, and his mate, 32-year-old Osei Kwabena, were trapped in the wreckage.
Rescue personnel arrived promptly and deployed specialised extrication equipment to free the victims, who were later conveyed to the Peki Government Hospital for treatment. No fatalities were recorded.
The GNFS said investigations were underway to establish the causes of both the fire outbreaks and the accident.
