Scene at Kwame Nkrumah Circle
THE NATIONAL capital, Accra, has once again flooded after a heavy downpour of rains.
A Sunday, April 7, 2019, unexpected torrential rains exposed the city’s seeming unpreparedness to overcoming perennial floodings.
Major parts of the city were virtually submerged under rain waters, leaving many people stranded.
At the Nkrumah Circle which witnessed a deadly fire-flood disaster on June 3, 2015, leaving over 150 people dead, vehicles and traders struggled to meander their way through the flood.
Some individuals sighted by DGN Online at Circle, had to take off their shoes or slippers, to walk through the fast-moving waters.
Areas like Nima, Avenor, Alajo, drains were choked.
The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources and the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) have been teaming up in recent times to dredge major drains in the city in preparation for the raining season.
But with the Sunday’s evening downpour leaving the city vulnerable to flood once again, it appears the authorities have more work to do this year.
