Accra Floods Again

Heavy floods swept through the nation’s capital, Accra, after a downpour yesterday, destroying homes and forcing the closure of shops and other businesses.

The heavy rainfall also obstructed the flow of vehicular traffic on the 37 Military Hospital-Legon stretch, particularly areas around Airport, Spanner, and Africa Regent Hotel.

Other affected areas were Kaneshie First Light, Mallam, Alajo, Adabraka, Makola and Odawna, among others.

At Teshie Roman Junction, the occupants of a Toyota Corolla narrowly escaped death when a gigantic billboard crashed off and trapped them just before midday.

Some commuters cautiously drove through the flood which covered most part of the road, while others parked their cars to wait for the rain to stop.

Most of the places experienced traffic jams since the floodwaters made the roads impassable for cars.

It comes after rain pummeled the capital city on May 6, 2024, injuring one person when a tree fell on a motorcycle and a vehicle in Cantonments.

In that instance, the motorbike rider, attempting to avoid the falling tree, collided with the descending trunk, while a military officer caught up in the pandemonium at Cantonments escaped unharmed.

A similar occurrence happened at Kotoka International Airport when trees fell on about six cars that were parked around the Landing Restaurant, causing damage.

Flooding in May is becoming normal in Ghana due to climate change, with the rainy season commencing there.

Some residents fear there could be more flooding in the city if the rain continues, but the Metrological Agency is forecasting that it will rain till Sunday, May 26, 2024.

Meanwhile, the city returned to normal, with shops reopening before 5:00 pm yesterday.
