The management of the Agona Swedru Senior High School in the Central Region has suspended 25 final-year students indefinitely following a violent altercation allegedly sparked by a same-sex relationship proposal between two male students.

According to school authorities, the incident began when one student reportedly expressed romantic interest in a colleague, who declined the proposal. The student who was approached is said to have confided in friends, who allegedly encouraged him to accept the proposal and lure the other student into a trap.

On the day of the planned meeting, a group of students, believed to be allies of the student who was approached, ambushed and physically assaulted the student who had made the proposal. In response, the victim is said to have informed his dormitory mates, leading to a retaliatory attack and a larger brawl involving multiple students.

The school administration subsequently launched an investigation and identified 25 students as being directly involved in the incident.

Headmistress of the school, Mrs. Golda Esi Andam, confirmed the disciplinary action in an interview with Onua News, stating that all students were given the opportunity to explain their roles in the incident before the decision to suspend them was taken.

“These students will be allowed to write their final exams under the supervision of their parents,” she said, indicating, “They have now realised that the Ghana Education Service does not take breaches of its code of conduct lightly.”

Mrs. Andam further noted that while the students have been disciplined, their right to education has not been revoked.

She called on all students to respect the school’s rules and uphold standards of behaviour that promote a safe and inclusive learning environment.
