The Ahanta West Municipal Assembly in the Western Region has acquired more than 90,000 palm seedlings in partnership with B-BOVID, an agro-based enterprise to supply to farmers under the government’s ‘Planting for Food and Jobs’ programme.
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Madam Henrietta Eyison, who disclosed this, said the municipal would concentrate on oil palm, coconut and rubber cultivation, and added that the farmers would start planting the palm seedlings from next year.
She disclosed that under the Minerals Development Fund, about 30,000 people had been targeted for alternative livelihood projects.
Madam Eyison, who was speaking at a meet-the-press session, said under the One-district One-factory initiative, some investors had decided to build a fibre glass company, petroleum tanks and gas stations within the municipal to create jobs for the people.
She mentioned the construction of mechanized water systems, school infrastructure, places of convenience, resurfacing of roads and road construction and alternative livelihood projects, among others, as various social intervention initiatives being undertaken to raise the living standards of the people in the area.
She, therefore, entreated chiefs and family heads to peacefully deal with investors who approached them for lands especially on mineral exploration to help recoup more income for the assembly to advance the development of the area.
She noted that in the area of education, government had made good efforts in providing infrastructure from the kindergarten to the senior high school levels. She added that all school projects which had become death traps to schoolchildren had been duly communicated to the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service.
The MCE told the media that a business resource centre set up by the assembly was also supplying start-up kits to artisans to grow entrepreneurial skills in the area.
Mrs. Faustina Koranteng, the Municipal NCCE Director, stressed the need for the people to participate in the December 17 district and unit committee level elections and the referendum to ensure that the district elections assume a partisan spirit.
