The District Chief Executive (DCE) of Asuogyaman, Samuel Kwame Agyekum, has hinted of government’s intentions to revamp the ailing Akosombo Textiles Limited (ATL).

The DCE, who made this known to BUSINESS GUIDE, said the refurbishment of the textile producing entity was in anticipation of the commencement of government’s ‘One district, One factory’ programme.

According to him, the exercise by government would restore the factory, which was on the verge of breaking down to its glory days and provide the much-needed employment opportunities for young people in the area.

The once vibrant company in the country has over the years been bedeviled with several challenges, including importation of cheap fabrics from other parts of the world, as well as non-payment of workers salary due to low patronage of products.

Due to these challenges, there has been drastic reduction in production capacity, which has also affected employment level in the area.

Mr. Agyekum, acknowledging the private sector as the main stakeholder in the programme, noted that ATL is not going to be the only beneficiary of the programme in the district.

He, however, explained that the rejuvenation of the company would provide jobs for the constituents, adding that “the objective of the One District One Factory’ programme is to provide jobs for the people.”

“We are very lucky to have the Akosombo Textiles Limited (ATL) and so we are going to invest seriously in the factory by upgrading it from its current status since a vibrant ATL can employ a lot of the youth,” he said.
