The Electoral Commission of Ghana has issued a directive regarding votes cast in favour of the late Madam Akua Donkor, the presidential candidate for the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), in the upcoming 2024 presidential election.

According to the commission, despite Akua Donkor’s image and party logo remaining on the ballot paper, all votes cast in her favour will be counted as rejected ballots and will not be added to the valid votes cast.

This decision comes after the GFP was disqualified from the 2024 presidential election due to irregularities on the nomination forms of Philip Appiah Kubi, the party’s new presidential candidate.

The commission discovered that Appiah Kubi had used names and details of registered voters from different districts to represent other districts, violating the requirement that two registered voters from each district must endorse the nomination form of a presidential candidate.

In a statement, the Electoral Commission has informed the general public, as well as its permanent and temporary staff and agents of the presidential candidates, about this directive.

The commission’s decision is aimed at ensuring transparency and fairness in the electoral process.
