Police in Akwatia have arrested a suspect for allegedly removing campaign posters belonging to one of the candidates at a polling station, causing an early morning disturbance as voting got underway in the constituency’s by-election.
Law enforcement responded swiftly, preventing any disruption to the voting process. Authorities have since issued a firm warning, stating that any attempts to interfere with the election, including acts of intimidation or violence, will be dealt with decisively.
Over 50,000 registered voters are expected to cast their ballots in what is to be a closely contested race between Bernard Bediako Baidoo of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Solomon Kwame Asumadu of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Both candidates have mounted intensive campaigns, backed by high-profile visits from party executives and national leadership in recent weeks.
To ensure the integrity of the electoral process, the Ghana Police Service has deployed more than 5,500 officers across the constituency. The Electoral Commission has also reassured the public of a free, fair, and transparent election.
